NEC LCD Technologies to Enhance Line-up of LCD Modules With White LED Backlight System Through Launch of Two New TFT LCD Modules
For immediate use Sep 11, 2007
NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd.
TOKYO, September 11, 2007 --- NEC LCD Technologies today introduced two new 6.5-inch (17cm-diagonal) amorphous-silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules with high luminance and video graphics array (VGA) resolution. The modules, part number NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D, eliminate the need for an inverter circuit by employing white light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the backlight system, instead of the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) that are traditionally used. The white LED backlight system achieves low power consumption in a slim package that, while lightweight, is highly resistant to shock and vibration, making it ideal for use in portable display systems in industrial applications. By eliminating the need for an inverter circuit it becomes possible to curb the generation of high-frequency noise and harmonic current. Moreover, because the LED backlight system is free of mercury, the new NEC modules are more environmentally friendly than modules using CCFL backlights. One of the new models, part number NL6448BC20-21C, incorporates NEC LCD Technologies’ proprietary super-transmissive natural light TFT (ST-NLT) technology and is able to display vivid colors in environments with high ambient light, resulting in high reliability and excellent visibility in a variety of viewing environments.
Worldwide the need for portable terminals in industrial applications has been rising rapidly. Since most of the portable terminals are battery powered they require low power consumption and compact light weight displays that are durable enough for use in severe environments, such as outdoors or in-vehicle. "To respond to the increasing need for industrial-application displays that offer high reliability, visibility, and durability, NEC LCD Technologies launched a new 6.5-inch XGA LCD module with a white LED backlight system, part number NL10276BC13-01C, earlier this year," said Masaaki Hiroshima, Product Planning Department Manager, NEC LCD Technologies. "Subsequently, demand for LED LCD modules, in a variety of resolutions and sizes, has increased. Our two new products ensure that we continue to offer an unmatched range of LCD products, meeting the needs of customers in every industry."
The company will continue to enhance its line-up of LCD modules featuring white LED backlight systems to address the needs of a variety of industrial applications. In addition, the company aims to improve the range of environments where LCD modules can be used through continued performance enhancement of its broad range of LCD modules.
NEC LCD Modules at Embedded Systems Conference
Showcasing NEC’s leading-edge technology, NEC Electronics America will demonstrate a new 6.5-inch LCD module, part number NL10276BC13-01C, plus other modules with white LED backlight systems at Embedded Systems Conference (booth #1009), Boston Hynes Convention Center, September 19-20. Announced at Society of Information Display (SID) conference in May 2007, the NL10276BC13-01C module has high luminescence and extended graphics array (XGA) resolution, and is ideal for portable display systems used in industrial applications.
