NEC LCD Technologies to Launch Advanced High Luminance 21.3-Inch
Monochrome QXGA LCD Module for Medical Use
For immediate use April 13, 2006
NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd.
Tokyo, April 13, 2006 --- NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. (NEC LCD Technologies) today announced that it will begin shipping samples of its new 21.3-inch (54-centimeters-diagonal) monochrome quad extended graphics array (QXGA), amorphous silicon, thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT LCD) module, part number NL204153AM21-07A, in mid-June. The new, upgraded LCD module is ideal for medical use, including the display of radiograms using X-ray images for the interpretation and diagnosis of illness.
The new LCD module is an upgraded model of a combination of two 21.3-inch TFT LCD modules; NL160120AM27-06A, a high luminance monochrome model that was launched in April 2005, and NL204153BM21-01A, a QXGA monochrome model that was launched in October 2003. Furthermore, it boasts luminance of 1500cd/m2, the highest luminance level in the 3-mega pixels and above monochrome class, due to its combination of NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-advanced, super-fine TFT (SA-SFT) technology, and a high-intensity, direct, back-light system. In addition, the new product realizes a high-level of contrast performance and brightness uniformity.
The main characteristics of the new product are as follows:
- High Luminance
The combination of NEC LCD Technologies' own unique super-advanced, super-fine TFT (SA-SFT) technology, and a high-intensity, direct, back-light system achieve a luminance of 1500cd/m2, the highest luminance level in the 3-mega pixels and above monochrome class. Furthermore, if the level of luminance is suppressed, stable luminance levels can be preserved over long periods of time. - High Contrast Performance
By reviewing the panel design, the level of black brightness was reduced by 30% or more as compared with the conventional model, NL160120AM27-06, which is also equipped with a high-intensity, direct, back-light system. Consequently, the new product achieves a high contrast ratio of 850:1, the highest in the 3-mega pixels and above monochrome class. In addition, the optimization of the optical design inhibits the "washed-out-black" phenomenon, which occurs when the viewing angle performance of the contrast ratio is improved and the viewing angle is enlarged, a common issue of In Plane Switching type LCD modules. - Reduction in weight by high integration of peripheral circuitry
Review of the panel design and optical design leads to a reduction in the brightness difference of the screen. As a result, the new product achieves high-grade brightness uniformity of the entire screen, a feature that has long-been sought after for certain applications, such as those in the medical field where brightness uniformity should conform to specific standards, including DIN6868-57 (*1), when manufacturers of medical display units adopt a display for image diagnosis.
The 21.3-inch monochrome UXGA TFT LCD module NL160120AM27-06A, which was launched last April, achieved a brightness of 1800cd/m2, the highest brightness level in the UXGA and above color class. This was realized by a high-intensity, direct, back-light system, which was installed for the first time in the module lineup of NEC LCD Technologies. This product is currently enjoying high acclaim in the medical field as a LCD module that can preserve stable brightness levels over a long period of time.
"Since the release of our highly successful 21.3 inch monochrome UXGA LCD in April last year, we have been inundated with requests for a higher resolution LCD module with a similar level of performance from the medical field," said Hidetoshi Usui, department manager in charge of product planning and marketing, NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. "This new and advanced model meets this demand by boasting enhanced display quality through NEC LCD Technologies' own innovative technologies that realize ultra high luminance color of an unrivalled level."
NEC LCD Technologies has continuously focused on R&D pursuing better picture quality based on its proprietary SA-SFT technology in response to the advanced needs of a wide variety of professional fields, including the medical field. This new product has been achieved by synthesizing the results of R&D for high picture quality and the adaptive design technologies that NEC LCD Technologies has cultivated over many years.
NEC LCD Technologies will continue to pursue an even higher level of picture quality to supply products unrivaled in the medical field, and to contribute to the progress of IT therein.
In addition, NEC LCD Technologies will begin selling another new 21.3-inch (54cm diagonal) color UXGA amorphous silicon TFT LCD module, part number NL160120BC27-14, which is suitable for CAD/CAM, CG design and DTP use, in mid-June., 2006.
Both new products will be displayed at Display 2006, which is being held in Tokyo Big Sight, Japan, from April 19 - 21.
*1:
DIN stands for "Deutsche Institute fur Normung" (German Standards Institution). DIN6868-57 is a criterion for the brightness uniformity of a display screen. Brightness uniformity refers to the brightness variation from the center of the screen to the four corners of the screen. Current DIN6868-57 requires brightness variation to be less than 15%. DIN conformance is now a mandatory requirement for a display to be sold in the German market as medical equipment. (Brightness uniformity for a commercial display is 25%)
